England sweat on Terry
11 Oct 2007 - 11:18:38
England are sweating on the fitness of captain John Terry, after he was sent for a precautionary scan on a knee problem.
The 26-year-old Chelsea centre-back pulled up in training on Wednesday, with Terry already sporting a protective mask over the right cheekbone he fractured against Fulham at the end of September.
The results of the scan are expected late on Thursday afternoon, with England head coach Steve McClaren anxiously awaiting the verdict on his skipper ahead of the Euro 2008 qualifiers against Estonia and Russia.
Meanwhile, Michael Owen has played down talk of him becoming England record all-time goalscorer, as he currently stands on 40 strikes after his double against Russia at Wembley.
The 27-year-old Newcastle United ace said: "It would be a fantastic achievement, but it is something that is still a long way off.
"I keep it in the back of my mind because I keep telling myself that I have played for England for nearly ten years now and I have scored 40 goals, which is an average of four a year.
"If that is the case, should I stay fit, maintain my form and stay in the team, I am still over two years from doing it.
"Two weeks is a long time in football, let alone two years."
