Drogba set to face FA probe

13 Nov 2008 - 08:31:34

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba is set to face further action after throwing a coin towards Burnley fans during the Blues' shock Carling Cup fourth round exit at Stamford Bridge.

The 30-year-old made a gesture and returned a missile at the Clarets fans after opening the scoring against the Championship side, who hit back to equalise and eventually win the tie in a penalty shootout.

The Ivory Coast international was quick to issue an apology for his actions after the game, telling his club's official website: "This is something I want to make clear. I tried to celebrate the goal and I received some things at me.

"The big mistake I did was to throw it back, so if someone was hurt I just want to apologise for it.

"This is not something I should show in a football match and I want to apologise. It was an incident in the heat of the moment and I regret it.

"It was just a mistake and nothing more."

A Blues spokesman later confirmed that the club will not take any further action against Drogba until they have seen the referee's match report, but the FA and even the police are likely to take a dim view of the incident.

Meanwhile, Chelsea head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has admitted to being concerned at his side's current form with the Blues having been beaten by both Liverpool and Roma in recent weeks.

He added: "We lost against Liverpool, we lost against Roma and we lost against Burnley.

"Every time we lost it's a problem for us. We need to try again with the confidence for the players."
