Deco looks to shine in diamond

Chelsea midfielder Deco is relishing the new lease of life given to him by manager Carlo Ancelotti. The former Barcelona player moved to Stamford Bridge for £7.9million a little over a year ago but did not shine in his first season, making only sporadic first-team appearances. A transfer away from the club was mooted during the summer, with Inter Milan seeming a likely destination. However, the 31-year-old ended up staying with Chelsea and has adapted well to Ancelotti's new-look diamond formation. He was influential in his side's Tuesday night victory over Sunderland, capping off a fine performance with a brilliant goal, and believes the new system plays to his strengths. "The system is good because we have more possession and have the ball all the time," Deco said. "We have four in midfield and we can play better than when we had the three. When we defend it's more difficult because we have to go both sides, but to play in it is fantastic. "I know, if I am fit and well, I can play. I just want to help the team and I think the coach trusts and believes in me. I am enjoying playing under him." Ancelotti pointed out that Deco will not be lacking motivation during the upcoming season, as he realises a place in Portugal's World Cup squad could hinge on the current campaign. The Italian manager was also quick to quash any remaining rumours that the midfielder could still be on his way out of the Premier League. "Deco does not want to go, and we do not want him to," Ancelotti said. "He is working very well now, he is very motivated to play and this is a very important season for him before the World Cup, and he played very well, both for him and for the team. "The motivation for everyone arrived because we want to do the best, not only for me, but it's the same for the players and the club. We want to do the best work, improve and be the best."
