Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in a press release on May 23, 2014 confirmed that they had reached an agreement with Chelsea FC for defender David Luiz. The press release in the club’s official website read, “Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea FC and David Luiz would like to confirm that they reached an agreement regarding the terms of an upcoming transfer of the Brazilian defender that would occur during the next transfer window which is to start on 10th June 2014.”

Although no transfer fee was mentioned ,reports claim the fee to be around 40 million , which would make the 27 year old Brazilian the world’s most expensive defender ahead of national team mate Thiago Silva whom PSG bought in 2012 ,for a then world record fee of 36 million. Chelsea bought Luiz for 21 Million from Benefica in 2011, and since then the Brazilian has gone on make 143 appearances in all competitions for the club and scored 12 goals.

Chelsea are keen on securing the services of Athletico Madrid striker Diego Costa, but because of Fifa’s Financial Fair Play (FFP), cannot afford to spend heavily on incoming players unless they recoup similar amounts from outgoings. Therefore, the fee received from selling Luiz is belived to be to kept for funding Costa’s transfer to Stamford Bridge. Interestingly enough PSG went forward with the multi-million move for Luiz even after they were found guilty of breaching the FFP rules recently.
