Cuadrado edges towards a big-money Chelsea future

The big obstacle for the move appears to be resolved with Chelsea reported to have agreed to sell Andre Schurrle to raise the funds to capture Cuadrado. News just this morning suggests that Schurrle is set for a medical at Wolfsburg ahead of a transfer with the club offering Chelsea £21m plus add-ons that could be worth £27m in total.

The German World Cup winner has found few opportunities to play at Chelsea and has started just five times for the West London club.

The move for Cuadrado is expected to cost Chelsea somewhere in the region of £26.8m according to the Daily Mail and could result in the player being available for the weekend match against Man City. The player would be expected to play on the right side of midfield where he will challenge Willian for a starting birth.

The Fiorentina coach appears resigned to losing the player to Chelsea, saying: “He has the characteristics suited to English football because he’s fantastic in positive transitions and with Mourinho it could be perfect.

“I think Chelsea have probably been in talks with his agent, but I don’t know. His €35m release clause has to be paid if he is to leave.”

Cuadrado is noted for his blistering pace and trickery which has earned the player the nickname ‘Vespa’ in Italy after the classic scooter. The 26-year-old is also noted for the quality and variety of his ball to front-men at Fiorentina. Expect a quick registration once the Schurrle deal goes through.

It is not clear if the deal for Champions League cup tied Douglas Costa will now go through as the suggestion is that he was always second choice.
