Coventry v Chelsea live!

07 March 2009 12:55
65 Essien is coming on to play for the first time for Chelsea since August. Injured on international duty, he's replacing Mikel. 61 Lampard slides the ball through to Malouda but some good goalkeeping sees Westwood come out to dive at his feet and make a key save. It could have been 2-0 otherwise. 59 Former Hibs midfielder Guillaume Beuzelin comes on for Doyle as Coventry make their first change. 54 Not a great deal has changed in this second half, Chelsea still looking comfortable. 46 Quaresma gets involved early and whips in a good cross from the right. Drogba gets a foot to the ball at the near post but sends it wide. Restart: As the game gets back under way, Ricardo Quaresma is on in place of Kalou for Chelsea. 45+1 That's the half time whistle and Chelsea lead thanks to that Drogba goal. Apologies for the lack of updates - all sorts of technical woe at this end. 44 Drogba drags a shot wide from 25 yards. It's past the right-hand post of Westwood. 36 Eastwood shoots at Cech. The ball bounced in front of the keeper by the Czech stopper was equal to the task. 35 A good free kick from 30 yards plus has to be tipped over by Westwood. The ball was dipping under the bar before the keeper intervened, 31 Bosingwa finds Ballack in the box but his shot is well blocked by Turner's challenge. 29 Jordan Henderson curls the free kick towards the far post but it's the wrong side of the upright. 28 Best is fouled in an aerial challenge by Alex on the left edge of the penalty area. 24 Best sets off on a good run and gets away from Alex. He then comes inside Terry only to shoot off target. 21 A long throw into the Chelsea box is cleared by a combination of Jon Obi Mikel and Petr Cech. The keeper caught his team-mate on the way through and now needs treatment. 18 Alex heads over following a corner. 17 Kalou runs into the box on the right but is stopped by a good tackle from Turner. 16 A good response from Coventry. However, Eastwood's shot is stopped by John Terry's outstretched leg. 15 GOAL - DROGBA. A gift of a goal for the Chelsea hitman. First Turner gets under a long ball forward but even then Scott Dann should stop the danger. He allows himself to be robbed by Drogba who goes on to round the keeper and produce a good finish from a tight angle. 14 Cole tries to find Ballack down the left but the pass is slightly overhit and the attack breaks down. 12 Eastwood and Best attempt to link up as Coventry go forward but again the pass isn't good enough and the Chelsea defence is able to halt the danger. 10 Florent Malouda finds space on the left side of the box but is flagged offside. That was the wrong decision but the Frenchman's shot was straight a keeper Keiren Westwood anyhow. 9 It's already clear Chelsea are keeping the ball much better. That's no surprise, but it is something the hosts will need to try to do something about. Too many of their passes have been hopeful ones so far. 8 Bosingwa gets into the box on the right but then slices what I can only imgaine was a shot well wide of goal. Truly awful that was. 7 Kalou chests down for Michael Ballack but he is leaning back as he hits his shot from 20 yards and the ball spoons up and over the crossbar. 6 Eastwood drills a shot into the side netting but the whistle had already gone. Doyle clearly tripped Frank Lampard on the edge of the box as Chelsea tried to pass their way out of trouble. 5 Jose Bosingwa exhcanges passes with Salomon Kalou down the right but Hall is able to shepherd the ball out for a goal kick. 3 Didier Drogba goes close to an opening goal. He controls well and then manages to turn Ben Turner before dragging a left-foot shot just wide. A touch of class there from the Ivorian. 2 Michael Doyle knocks a long ball over the top for Morrison but it runs through to the keeper. Coventry will need more than that. 1 Predictable boos for Cole as he gets an early touch. Kick-off: We're ready to go and Coventry get us under way at the packed Ricoh Arena - apparently this is the first time the new stadium has ever been sold out by City. Feedback: Tomas Wren isn't expecting an upset. He says: "Chelsea will win 2-0 or 3-1. Drogba is going to score and Lampard." Team news: Coventry have a side with Premier League experience. The front two of Leon Best (who plays despite a throat infection) and Clinton Morrison have both played in the top flight, while Freddy Eastwood, a regular scorer in the Championship, provides support in what appears to be an attack-minded team selected by former Fulham boss Chris Coleman. At the back, Marcus Hall, who played for Coventry before thhey were relegated from the Premier League, comes in for the inured Daniel Fox. Team news: As you can see, Chelsea go with a strong team today and it includes Ashley Cole - in the news for the wrong reasons this week. No Nicolas Anelka today though. Michael Essien is on the bench after recovering from his serious knee injury. Chelsea team: Cech, Bosingwa, Terry, Alex, Ashley Cole, Lampard, Mikel, Ballack, Malouda, Drogba, Kalou. Subs: Hilario, Essien, Carvalho, Di Santo, Quaresma, Belletti, Mancienne. Coventry team: Westwood, Wright, Dann, Turner, Hall, Henderson, Gunnarsson, Doyle, Eastwood, Best, Morrison. Subs: Marshall, Ward, Beuzelin, Osbourne, McPake, Simpson, Thornton.
