Cole suffers injury setback
16 Jul 2009 - 12:08:16
Midfielder Joe Cole is facing a race against time to be fit for the start of Chelsea's Premier League season after being sent for surgery.
Cole, who has been out of action since damaging knee ligaments in an FA Cup third round replay against Southend United in January, has now been ruled out of the club's pre-season tour to the US.
The England midfielder was believed to be close to making his return to action but is now facing a longer spell on the sidelines.
"Joe Cole underwent minor surgery yesterday (Wednesday) to correct a small tear in his meniscus," read a club statement.
"In light of his previous surgery, excellent rehab and recent return to full training, this is only a minor setback and we expect Joe to return to full training in approximately one month.
"As a result, Joe has not joined the party for the tour of America."
Cole's place in the starting line-up is expected to come under threat from summer signing Yuri Zhirkov.
The Russia international has arrived at Stamford Bridge in a £15million deal from CSKA Moscow.
