Cole backs Capello's call
19 Aug 2008 - 07:13:13
Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has backed Fabio Capello to choose the right candidate for the England captaincy ahead of his announcement later on Tuesday.
Capello will name his full-time skipper at a lunchtime press conference ahead of Wednesday's friendly with Czech Republic, with Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand and Chelsea captain John Terry the two frontrunners for the post.
The Italian coach has rotated the captaincy in his first four games at the helm, but always intended to name a full-time skipper before the qualifying campaign for the next World Cup begins next month.
But whoever gets the nod, Cole believes will be the right man for the job.
He said: "Whoever the manager picks is going to be the right decision.
"We have got so many leaders in the squad now, the Liverpool captain, the Chelsea captain, the Manchester United captain - three out of the four top teams in the country.
"I am sure, irrespective of who takes the armband, there will still be another five or six leaders out there who will go out there and take us forward."
