Cisse double sinks Chelsea

Two sublime strikes by Papiss Cisse earned Newcastle a first victory at Chelsea since 1986 and boosted the Magpies' hopes of playing Champions League football next season.

Cisse's wonderful brace, his 12th and 13th league goals since joining the club in January, saw Alan Pardew's men pull clear of Chelsea in the race for fourth after the two sides kicked off separated by a single point in fifth and sixth place respectively.

Having largely been second-best for the opening exchanges, the visitors took the lead through Cisse after 19 minutes.

David Santon carved out the opening, surging forward and playing the ball into the feet of the Senegal striker, who flicked the ball into the air with his first touch and with his second unleashed a stunning left-footed shot beyond Petr Cech.

A minute before the interval, Hatem Ben Arfa's low cross from a corner eluded Yohan Cabaye but the ball ran through to Demba Ba, who struck a first-time effort that rattled the crossbar.

Just before the hour Cheick Tiote needed lengthy treatment after an aerial challenge with Mikel.

The uncompromising Magpies midfielder appeared to take a blow in the face and landed hard on the base of his back.

Tiote's injury, allied to the raft of substitutions, meant 10 minutes of stoppage time was added when 90 minutes were up, yet just when it looked as though the hosts would lay siege to the visitors' goal, Cisse popped up with a wondrous strike to settle the match.

A long throw down the line was knocked down by Shola Ameobi, and from the left side of the field, around 30 yards from goal, Cisse unleashed a stunning swerving effort with the outside of his right boot that completely deceived Cech as it dipped just under the crossbar.
