Chelsea's David Luiz set to be axed by Mourinho

The Daily Star reports that David Luiz is set to be axed from the Chelsea squad after team-mates have criticised Luiz for his attitude.

The Brazilian centre-back had an awful game in Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat at Newcastle United at the weekend and was criticised by fans after the game. Luiz was easily shrugged of the ball by the Newcastle forwards and Luiz looked the weakest link in the team. Luiz pulled out of a challenge with Shola Ameobi which Alan Shearer described as a ‘cop-out of a tackle from a defender who doesn’t want to get hurt.’

The performance of Luiz this season has been described as casual and it now seems he hast lost the backing of fans, fellow team-mates and Mourinho.

It would be harsh to single out Luiz as the reason for the defeat at Newcastle as the whole team did not perform to the level expected and even Mourinho admitted he made eleven mistakes that day. Chelsea fans are flooding social network sites asking for Cahill to start instead of Luiz ans it looks as though they may get their wish.

It is thought that Luiz will be left on the bench for the Champions League game against Schalke at Stamford Bridge tomorrow and could find himself there for a while depending on Cahill’s performance.

Luiz is not the only player to be dropped for the Schalke game with Branislav Ivanovic and Eden Hazard being left out due to a dip. These are key players and are expected to return to the team soon but Luiz could be out of time. Mourinho has reportedly lost patience with the defender and he could be off-loaded in January.
