Chelseabound Carlo Ancelotti planning farewell to AC Milan fans

If Ancelotti does so it will confirm that he is taking over at Chelsea. Maldini is retiring after a 24-year career at AC Milan and Sunday represents his final opportunity to say farewell at the San Siro before the season ends, away to Fiorentina, the following Sunday. Ancelotti, too, has gained legendary status at the club given the success he enjoyed as a player and subsequently during his eight years as a coach during which he has twice won the Champions League. The 49-year-old has told friends he is joining Chelsea while he has recently assured Roman Abramovich, the club owner, that he will honour the pre-contract agreement that he signed two months ago to become the club's next manager and succeed Guus Hiddink, who leaves after the FA Cup final on May 30. If Ancelotti makes a formal announcement that he is leaving Milan after Sunday's game it may force Chelsea into confirming his appointment. However the club would prefer to wait a week. Milan had considered making a move for Roma coach Luciano Spalletti but are more actively thinking of trying to recruit either Marco van Basten or ask technical director Leonardo to take over and inherit the existing backroom staff. Ancelotti had wanted to bring his team with him to Chelsea but may now be limited to just one or two appointments.
