The Football Association and the Premier League have joined forces to investigate Leeds United's allegation that Chelsea made illegal approaches to three of their academy players.
Tom Taiwo and Michael Woods eventually accepted offers to join Chelsea, while a third youngster, Danny Rose, opted to stay at Elland Road.
The two clubs have been unable to agree a compensation package for Taiwo and Woods, prompting Leeds chairman Ken Bates to make a formal complaint to the Football League about the Premiership champions' conduct.
The Football League referred the matter to the FA, which has now decided to get the Premier League involved.
A Premier League statement explained: "We have agreed to conduct a joint inquiry into allegations made by Leeds United FC against Chelsea FC.
"The inquiry will look into the alleged conduct of Chelsea FC in relation to three Leeds United academy players last season.
"The inquiry will be carried out by both the FA and the FAPL as the allegations relate to both FA and FAPL rules."
Chelsea have consistently denied any wrongdoing.
