Chelsea maintain 100 per cent start

    28 Aug 2010 - 17:05:19

Chelsea could not match their goalscoring exploits of recent weeks but maintained their 100 per cent start to the new campaign with a 2-0 victory over Stoke City at Stamford Bridge.

After putting six past both Wigan and West Brom in successive weekends and routing the Potters 7-0 towards the end of last season, it always looked like being a difficult afternoon for Tony Pulis' side.

Frank Lampard saw an early penalty saved by Thomas Sorensen after Ryan Shawcross had brought down Florent Malouda.

But the champions didn't have to wait too long to break the deadlock as John Terry strode out of defence on 32 minutes and played Malouda clean through on goal and the France winger made no mistake.

The Blues dominated possession for much of the game but were forced to wait until the 79th minute to make the points safe.

Sorensen was guilty of a clumsy challenge on Nicolas Anelka in the box and, with Lampard off the pitch, Didier Drogba coolly converted the penalty for his fourth goal of the season.

Across the capital there was a shock for Tottenham Hotspur after they went down 1-0 at home to Wigan Athletic.

The Latics had conceded 12 goals in two heavy opening defeats but picked up their first points of the season through Hugo Rodallega's 80th minute winner at White Hart Lane.

Goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi pulled off some important saves late in the game to ease the pressure on manager Roberto Martinez.

Blackpool and Fulham played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in the first Premier League game at Bloomfield Road.

Bobby Zamora headed the Cottagers into a first-half lead but the spirited home side fought back.

New signing Luke Varney was involved in both of their goals as his second-half shot was going wide before John Paintsil deflected the ball into his own net.

The former Derby County striker then fired home in the 76th minute to the delight of the Seasiders fans packed inside their new-look stadium.

But Ian Holloway's side were denied a second win from three top-flight games as Dickson Etuhu restored parity three minutes from full-time.

In Saturday's final 3pm kick-off, Wolves and Newcastle United shared the spoils following a 1-1 draw at Molineux.

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time for the home side, but in-form Magpies striker Andy Carroll earned his side a point with a 62nd minute headed equaliser.
