Chelsea lead chase for Berbatov

Following Dimitar Berbatovs’ agent expressing his clients desire to leave Craven Cottage, Chelsea find themselves at the front of the queue to secure the 32-year-old Bulgarians signature.

Mourinho has made no secret of his desire to add more goals to his current striking options and Berbatov could be the ideal short term solution.

Despite having a disappointing season by his high standards with just one Premiership goal so far, Berbatov would no doubt thrive on the ammunition provided by Hazard, Oscar, Mata and pals.

The former Manchester United and Tottenham strikers class and ability are beyond question and with an inconsistent Fernando Torres, a Demba Ba yet to explode as he did at Newcastle United and a Samuel Eto’o playing a cameo role in the Chelsea side, Blues supremo Jose Mourinho is likely to be on high alert as to the Fulham front mans situation. A failed attempt to persuade Wayne Rooney to make the switch to Stamford Bridge in the summer has left Chelsea seeking a striker of proven quality to lead their assault on the Premiership title.

Any funds from a potential sale of Berbatov would be welcome at Craven Cottage as the West London club begin to formulate a strategy to keep them in the Premiership. Potential swap deals for a host of Chelsea stars not playing regular first team football could also be a possible option for the Cottagers.

Despite the likelihood of a host of clubs both in the Premier League and abroad courting the want-away forward, the lure of Champions League football, one last big pay day and the chance to remain in London, may just be too tempting to prevent Berbatovs move just 2 miles across town.
