Chelsea v Juventus: Man marking

26 February 2009 08:01
Petr Cech: Was largely untroubled despite second-half pressure from Juventus. Made one particularly eye-catching save to deny Del Piero, though that was followed by a fumble that hardly inspired great confidence. 6 [LNB]Jose Bosingwa: Provided the usual width, running and danger with his crosses, though remains defensively suspect and often leaves considerable space behind him. 7 [LNB]Alex: Struggled more with the trickery and subtle movement of Del Piero than the more physical threat that was offered by Amauri. Made one particularly memorable block tackle on Chiellini which sent reverberations around Stamford Bridge. 6 [LNB]John Terry: Chelsea were not at their best, but never really looked like conceded, largely thanks to Terry's presence and physical strength in defence. 7 [LNB]Ashley Cole: A relatively quiet night. Offered support and width when possible for Nicolas Anelka, though defensive duties came first amid pressure on the right from Camoranesi. 6 [LNB]Frank Lampard: One of the Chelsea's players whose fitness surely cannot be queried, though struggled to really stamp his authority on the game following his outstanding form this season. 6 [LNB]John-Obi Mikel: Began strongly but faded somewhat as the match wore on. Certainly has the physical strength and defensive discipline to play the midfield anchor role that was vacated by Claude Makelele, though doubts persist over his distribution. 6 [LNB]Michael Ballack: One of the Chelsea players who is perhaps beginning to feel his age following recent injuries as well as a busy international summer with Germany. Flashes of quality, but looks increasingly one-paced. 5 [LNB]Salomon Kalou: Deservedly keeping Malouda out of the team just now and provided a delightful through-ball to tee up Drogba for Chelsea's winning goal. 7 [LNB]Didier Drogba: Took his goal well, though flashed several headed chances wide. Still needs minutes on the pitch to rediscover full match fitness, but certainly looks fully committed and, injuries permitting, should get better as the season unfolds. 7 [LNB]Nicolas Anelka: Has wanted to be included in the same team as Drogba, though would probably prefer a more central role. He was largely peripheral to the left of an attacking front three. 5[LNB]
