Chelsea v Everton live!

30 May 2009 14:21
90+4 Yellow card. Baines can have no complaints with being cautioned for bringing down Bosingwa just outside the box. It was a tired lunge from Baines and it's surely all over for Everton now. 90+2 Another chance for Chelsea to finish the game off following another clever pass over the top from Lampard to release Anelka, who lifts his shot over the bar under pressure from Lescott. 90+1 Chelsea get a relieving free-kick midway inside their own half after Pienaar brings down Ballack. Time is running out and Chelsea are surely set to lift the FA Cup for a fifth time. 90 There are to be four added minutes at the end of the game, so there is still time for Everton, but they need to get the ball forward much quicker. 90 Cahill tries his luck from 30 yards after cutting in from the left, but his shot is wide of Cech's right-hand post and Moyes looks dejected on the touchline. 89 Wasteful stuff from Everton after being awarded a free-klck in their own half. A long ball forward is too long and the spirit seems to have gone from David Moyes' side. 87 With three minutes to go, it's hard to see how Everton are going to find an equaliser. Chelsea are keeping the ball high up the pitch and Everton have just not had enough quality possession throughout the game. 86 Bosingwa gets caught by Pienaar after a robust challenge between the pair. The Chelsea full-back is quick to shrug off the effects of the knock and play continues. 84 Yellow card. Lampard blots his copybook by getting booked for diving in an attempt to win a penalty. There is contact with Pienaar's leg in the box, but the way Lampard tumbled over did him no favours and Webb can't be faulted for showing the yellow card. 83 Everton make their final change of the game with Dan Gosling, who scored a dramatic late winner against Liverpool earlier in the competition, coming on for Osman, who has not really got involved in the game today. 82 Everton substitute Vaughan does superbly well to dig out a cross from near the corner flag on the left which Cech can't reach, but no Toffees player is able to take advantage at the far post. Not long left for Everton to snatch an equaliser. 80 Having seen a replay of Malouda's stunning shot, Chelsea will certainly feel aggrieved if Everton get back into this game as the ball did bounce over the line. Hard to really blame the linesman given that he was up with the play when Malouda had theshot - let's hope it doesn't prove decisive otherwise there will be another big row. 78 Malouda almost gets a third goal after smacking his shot from 30 yards against the crossbar. It bounced down very close to the line, with Howard having no chance of stopping his attempt. He has had a fine game Malouda, probably one of his best in a Chelsea shirt. 77 Vaughan is now brought on, with Louis Saha making way - presumably the French striker's fitness would not allow him to complete 90 minutes as he is always capable of nicking a goal. Let's see what Vaughan can do. 76 Pienaar is receiving treatment after being hurt following a fair challenge from Anelka prior to that chance for Malouda. Everton are waiting to bring on Vaughan, but we will have to wait and see who comes off. 75 Malouda should have put the game to bed, but misses a great chance after getting the benefit of the doubt from the linesman's flag. Great control from Cole on the left, he plays the ball inside to Lampard, who slips in a pass to Malouda, but the Frenchman fires over the crossbar when he should have scored. 73 Everton try to respond immediately with Pienaar picking up the ball on the left corner of the box, but the South African's shot drifts wide of Cech's goal, with the Chelsea keeper not looking troubled. 72 GOAL! Chelsea take the lead and it's that man Lampard who has put his team in front after breaking free from the attentions of Phil Neville. He turned well on the edge of the box on to his left foot and fires a precise drive from 25 yards which Howard gets his hands to but is unable to stop. Howard should have done better, but a fine strike from Lampard. 71 Everton boss David Moyes is starting to get animated on the touchline. He may have to make a decision on Cahill soon who is still struggling with the effects of that knock he picked up about 10 minutes to go. 70 Chelsea almost go back in front in lucky circumstances as Malouda darts to the line. He fires in a cross with his left foot, which nicks off Fellaini and then clatters off Drogba and goes wide. It could have gone anywhere and Howard would not have stood a chance of stopping it. 69 Everton have dealt much better with the threat of Malouda and Cole on the left in the second half. Jacobsen's experience has been useful and Osman has shown a greater willingness to track back and stick more to his position, rather than drift in field too often. 67 Chance for Everton after working a free-kick down the left-hand side. Baines plays in a great cross from the left and Saha steams on to the ball unmarked, but he heads the ball over the crossbar. Should certainly have hit the target and made Cech work - Everton's best chance since the goal in the opening minute. 65 Excellent tackle by Baines to prevent Anelka from getting away down the right-hand side after Fellaini sloppily gave away possession. I know Fellaini scores some important goals, but I'm not yet convinced by his technical ability on the ball. What do Everton fans think? Email me at mark.buckingham@bskyb.com. 63 Yellow card. John Obi Mikel is the first Chelsea player to have his name taken by Webb following a challenge in the centre circle. Looks more likely to be for dissent than the tackle itself. 62 Cahill stings the gloves of Cech from 25 yards after the ball bounced kindly for the Australian after Terry's attempted clearance clattered back off the Everton man, who now appears to have been hurt. 61 Chelsea make their first change of the game and it's Michael Ballack who is coming on to replace Essien. Interesting decision that one as Essien doesn't look injured - maybe Hiddink is after a little more control of the ball in midfield. 60 Chelsea's turn to threaten with Anelka having drifted infield. A superb pass from Lampard with the outside of his boot finds Anelka in the left channel and he lifts his shot over Howard, but it drifts just over the crossbar. Certainly a good chance for the Premier League's top scorer. 59 Saha clearly fancies his chances when he has a sight at goal, but he rather rushed that effort from 25 yards. The ball bounced up nicely, but he possibly got in a tangle with his own player before firing a left-footed volley that was closer to troubling the corner flag than the goal. 58 Everton just need to have a little bit more awareness when in possession. Baines made a great run down the left-hand side in behind Anelka, but Neville in the centre circle failed to spot a relatively simple pass and knocked it back to Lescott, allowing Chelsea to regroup. 56 The game's turned a little scrappy with Lescott's long ball easily cleared by Terry and then Malouda's attempt to send Drogba away at the opposite end a wayward pass. 55 David Murray feels the Neville yellow card was symptomatic of referees not punishing players from top-four clubs, while Mark Sheldon is hoping for a 3-1 scoreline so he can buy some beer tonight! 54 In addition to bringing on Jacobsen at half-time, Everton have also tweaked things further up the field with Cahill now playing in a more advanced role, with Fellaini dropping into midfield. 52 Wasted opportunity for Everton as a fine cross from Neville on the right eventually reaches Pienaar at the far post. He brings it under control well, but then tries to play in the invisible man on his blind side. Could have been a shooting opportunity. 51 The half-time break has not helped to improve Everton's use of possession with substitute Lars Jacobsen giving the ball away with a careless pass. Maybe he just needs time to warm up. 49 Malouda has the first attempt of the second half as he volleys over the bar from the edge of the area after Lampard's corner is headed out from the six-yard box. 48 Yellow card. A bit of a lunging tackle from Phil Neville on Mikel there as his trailing leg catches the Chelsea midfielder on the calf. A little inconsistent from Howard Webb as the challenge was not dissimilar to the one Essien did on Fellaini in the first half and he didn't get booked. 47 Jack Higgins - presumably not the best-selling author - has emailed in and he thinks Everton can bounce back in the second half and cause an upset by scoring a late winner. 46 Chelsea get the second half underway with the scores locked at 1-1. How do you think the second half will go? Will it be settled in 90 minutes or will it go on for longer? Email in at mark.buckingham@bskyb.com. 46 Everton make a change at half-time, with Lars Jacobsen coming on for Tony Hibbert at right-back. Unsure if Hibbert is injured, but would not be surprised if it is tactical as the full-back has been booked and has been troubled by Malouda, with Cole also getting forward well on Chelsea's left. Skybet's half-time odds are as follows - 10/11 Chelsea 7/5 draw 5/1 everton. Very open game for a final and we have taken chunks for both sides. Lampard would be disastrous for next scorer, with plenty of big bets at 8/1. Gary the Gasman has endured a Homer Simpson Doh! moment after missing the start of the game due to the wonderful weather making him lose track of time. Still, he's backing the underdog and going for an Everton win - and I'm sure he's not the only one to miss Everton's goal after just 25 seconds. 45 HALF-TIME! It's 1-1 at Wembley, with Everton having enjoyed a dream start through Louis Saha's goal after just 25 seconds - the fastest in FA Cup final history. Chelsea equalised on 21 minutes through Didier Drogba's header and Guus Hiddink's side have enjoyed the best of the possession and pressure. Still interestingly poised, so stay with us for the second half - and possibly extra-time and penalties. 45+1 Everton work the corner short between Pienaar and Baines, who plays a cross into the box which is just behind Saha and Chelsea are able to eventually clear their lines. 45 Nervy goalkeeping from Cech as he gives away a cheap corner. A poor free-kick from Baines appears an easy one for Cech to claim, yet he fumbles under no pressure and it's out for a corner 44 Scenting the chance of a fifth winners' medal, Cole gets a little excited in the box as he nips in behind Hibbert and, from an angle towards the corner of the six-yard box, the full-back slices his shot way off target. It was worth an effort, particularly as he had no real support. 43 Excellent defending from Neville at the opposite end of the pitch. Drogba turned and ran towards the box with great menace, but Neville appears to time his challenge perfectly to win the ball and leave Drogba on the ground. Drogba is now back on his feet. 42 Hibbert looks to get into space down the right-hand side for Everton, but excellent defending from Cole and Chelsea are back in possession. 40 Everton finally put a few passes together in midfield and at the back, but a long ball up to Fellaini in space catches the young Belgian offside. 38 Anelka looks forlornly at referee Webb after going down in the box following a challenge by Pienaar. Not sure if he wanted a penalty or a corner, but he gets neither and Webb has got it right in searing temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius. 37 Chelsea maintain their dominance on the ball and are working the ball well from left to right with Malouda the chief thorn in Everton's side. 35 Pienaar is certainly providing the creative element to Everton's game and another fine pass from the left almost reaches Saha, who is just unable to gather the ball in his stride. 34 Everton break from the corner and threaten for the first time in a while. Pienaar feeds Saha, who plays a lovely dinked ball into the box, but Cech gets there just in the nick of time to deny Cahill, who has got ahead of the strikers for the first time in the match. 33 The pressure is building from Chelsea with Lescott having to head away as Malouda threatens again, while on the opposite side of the pitch, Lampard's cross is deflected out for a corner, which is again a little disappointing. 32 Noel in Kildare has emailed in and he thinks Chelsea's goal has dented Everton's spirit, but providing they can hold on to this score until half-time, could be capable of nicking it in the second half. 31 Chelsea threaten again after a superb cross-field pass by Anelka to Malouda, who takes too long to decide what he is going to do. His eventual shot deflects back out to the edge of the box and Anelka's attempt is easily gathered by Howard. 29 Strong defending from Hibbert on that occasion as Malouda looked to test him on the left wing. Malouda knocked the ball past Hibbert, but the Everton full-back just had enough pace to snuff out the threat. Malouda will certainly look to exploit the fact that Hibbert is on a yellow card. 28 Chelsea, in much the same way Barcelona were lifted by a goal in the Champions League final, look far more confident now and appear to have control of the game in the midfield area. 27 Fellaini required a little bit of treatment after that injury, but appears to be OK to continue as Everton just look to try and get the ball - something they've not done all game really. 25 Referee Howard Webb is forced to step in to calm the situation down following a rash tackle by Essien on Fellaini by the left touchline. Webb has a word with Essien, but doesn't produce a card. It wasn't a pretty challenge and Hibbert must be wondering why he was booked and Essien wasn't. 23 Lampard has his first sight at goal after receiving the ball 30 yards out. From a central positon, he fires just over the crossbar, with the ball not dipping quickly enough to test Howard. 22 The goal has had an immediate effect on Everton's nerves, with the previously unflappable Lescott stumbling in possession in his own half to be robbed by Anelka. However, Baines is clever and wins a free-kick. Midway through the first half and how do you think the game will go from here? Email in at mark.buckingham@bskyb.com 21 GOAL! Chelsea are back in it and cup final specialist Drogba has headed Chelsea level. The ball was played out to Malouda on the left wing and he produced a perfect cross into the box for Drogba, who powered between the two centre-halves to head home from eight yards to give Howard no chance. 20 With a goal lead to protect, Everton's chief tactic at the moment has been to get the ball as far away from their own goal as quickly as possible. Plenty of long balls up towards Saha and Fellaini, but they are not able to make the ball stick. 19 The stats show Chelsea have dominated possession so far, but they have yet to really do much with it and there was a wasted cross-field pass from John Terry on that occasion. 17 Everton have a chance to take a breath following a foul by Bosingwa on Pienaar near the halfway line. Bosingwa did get the ball, but it's been an upbeat start to the game - certainly not what I was expecting. Maybe the late May sunshine has put a spring in everyone's step! 15 Everton are almost in again following a fine ball from Steven Pienaar on the left-hand side. Fellaini had tagged on to John Terry and the ball evaded the Chelsea skipper, but the Everton man was unable to bring it down. It was a half-chance for the Toffees, with Terry a little shaky in his efforts to control the situation. 14 Chelsea have their first real attempt of the game as the ball is fed out to Michael Essien on the edge of the box, but he has a Sunday League-style swing at the ball with his left foot and it drifts harmlessly off target. 13 Fellaini gives away a free-kick there. Is it inevitable that the big-haired Belgian midfielder will get booked today? 12 Chelsea get into the Everton box with purpose, but Ashley Cole, who is looking to become the first player in over 100 years to win five FA Cup finals, is offside. Right decision, but it again showed that Chelsea are eager to get their full-backs to support the attack as much as possible. 11 Saha may have scored a stunning early goal, but Joleon Lescott is putting himself forward as the early contender for man of the match. He has put in some good tackles and clearances already, and looks like he is enjoying a physical battle with Didier Drogba. 10 Bosingwa again takes the chance to get forward after Chelsea had initially built up play down the left-hand side. However, the full-back's control let him down and Pienaar tracked back well to help out Baines. 8 Yellow card. Tony Hibbert gets an early caution and the Everton full-back is a little unlucky following a tangle of legs with Florent Malouda on the left side of the pitch. Not dissimilar to the type of challenge which saw Eric Abidal sent off against Chelsea in the Champions League, although Malouda was not running on goal. Another poor delivery from Lampard from the free-kick. 7 The early response from Chelsea suggests they will look to raid down the right flank, with Bosingwa easily beating Baines, but his cross is cleared away by Lescott. I'm sure it's not been the start that anyone was expecting, but was something that Everton fans dreamed about last night! 5 It was a poor corner from Frank Lampard, but Phil Neville didn't receive a shout and he glanced it on at the far post and out for a throw-in to Chelsea. Nothing comes of it, though. 5 Chelsea are trying to get back into this as quickly as possible with Nicolas Anelka's cross from the right wing causing a bit of trouble for Tim Howard who is unable to catch the ball and Chelsea eventually force a corner. 4 Chelsea are just now trying to settle into the game after suffering a nightmare start at Wembley. Bits of possession for the Blues (or perhaps Yellows for this afternoon), but the ball runs through to Tim Howard. 2 What about that start for Everton? There was a suspicion of offside about Steven Pienaar before he played a cross into the box, but I'm sure Everton fans don't care about that. But have they scored too early? 1 GOAL! Can you believe it? Everton have scored the fastest goal in FA Cup final history with Louis Saha rattling one home after just 25 seconds. The ball broke to Saha just inside the box and he volleyed a stunning left-foot volley beyond Petr Cech. 0 Howard Webb, rated the Premier League's best referee, gets the game underway with Everton, in their traditional blue shirts, kicking things off with a big shadow cast over the pitch. Vorn in Perth, Australia is ruing the fact he is stuck at work while all his mates are watching the game. He is going for a 2-1 win for Everton and hopes to see Tim Cahill punching that corner flag. Has anyone had to forfeit a ticket for today's match in order to work? Email in throughout the game at mark.buckingham@bskyb.com. Not long to go now, with the national anthem currently being sung by someone called Faryl Smith, who was on Britain's Got Talent last year apparently. She's no Susan Boyle! Finally we have someone tipping an Everton win with Aly Aboul Enein feeling the Toffees could prevail on penalties. Having already beaten Liverpool, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough and Manchester United en route to the final, do Everton deserve to win the FA Cup for the first time in 14 years? There has not been much to criticise Guus Hiddink for since he took charge at Chelsea, but Tom in Kensington believes the Dutchman is 'mad' to leave out Ballack, feeling his experience would have helped to nullify the attacking threat of the likes of Cahill and Osman. Shaunvir Samra is just as confident as Mark in Clapham after also predicting a 3-0 win for Chelsea, while Kenn in Singapore is also expecting a big win for Chelsea despite his heart hoping for an Everton success. The excitement and tension is building ahead of kick-off, but what is going to separate the two teams after both Premier League clashes this season finished 0-0? Will Everton miss the unlucky Phil Jagielka? And can Drogba score the only goal again following his exploits in the 2007 final against Manchester United? Mark from Clapham has got in touch and he is feeling very confident about Chelsea's prospects today. He predicts Chelsea will smash Everton 3-0, with Anelka scoring twice and Ashley Cole also chipping in with a goal. Everton fans, how do you respond to that comment? Skybet have Chelsea at odds on (4/6) to win the battle of the Blues, with Everton priced at 7/2 and the draw is 13/5. However, Leon Osman was in brilliant form last weekend in getting a brace at Fulham and he is 16/1 to score 1st. Drogba is 11/2 to land that crucial opening goal and cup final history says 1-0 is a big runner. What do you make of the teams the two managers have chosen today? Has Hiddink made the right decision in going for John Obi Mikel instead of Michael Ballack in midfield? And what about Moyes' decision to plump for Louis Saha up front? Should Moyes have gone for Tim Cahill in attack, with Jack Rodwell in midfield, or is it best to have an out-and-out striker leading the line? Email in at mark.buckingham@bskyb.com. Everton team: Howard; Hibbert, Yobo, Lescott, Baines; Osman, Neville, Cahill, Fellaini, Pienaar; Saha. Subs: Nash, Castillo, Vaghan, Jacobsen, Rodwell, Gosling, Baxter. Everton's team has just one change from the side which won 2-0 at Fulham last week as Marouane Fellaini is restored to the starting line-up, so Jack Rodwell drops to the bench after Louis Saha was given the nod to start up front. Chelsea team: Cech; Bosingwa, Alex, Terry, A Cole; Essien, Mikel, Lampard; Anelka, Drogba, Malouda. Subs: Hilario, Ivanovic, Di Santo, Ballack, Kalou, Belletti, Mancienne. The teams have reached us for this afternoon's Wembley showpiece and Chelsea make two changes from the team which beat Sunderland 3-2 in the final Premier League game last weekend. Alex and Frank Lampard have both been passed fit and come into the starting line-up at the expense of Branislav Ivanovic and Juliano Belletti. Welcome to live coverage of the 2009 FA Cup final as Chelsea and Everton look to bring the curtain down on their respective seasons on a winning note. It is Guus Hiddink's last game in charge of the Blues, while David Moyes is seeking his first trophy as a manager, so it is certain to be a momentous occasion. You can get in touch with your opinions before and during the game by emailing me at mark.buckingham@bskyb.com.
