Chelsea target Sergio Aguero: six of the best goals

10 June 2009 12:47
In a recent World Cup qualifier Aguero, at a towering 5ft 7in, was the tallest of a gifted but diminutive attacking trident for Argentina that also contained Carlos Tevez and Lionel Messi. Though as the six clips below prove, his talent for goal scoring, as with his commensurate price tag, is anything but small. Atletico Madrid, powered by the goals of Aguero and Diego Forlan, secured a second successive top four finish in LA Liga this year, with the Argentine doing more than most to deliver Champions League football. Latching on to a hopeful ball forward, Aguero carried the ball to the corner of the box then bamboozled the defence with more turns that the Monaco Grand Prix circuit before firing an unstoppable effort in from 20 yards. Sporting Gijón 2 Atletico Madrid 5, December 2008With Atletico going through a sticky patch of form Aguero helped kick start the club's season with a bit of improvisation. A lofted free kick was headed back in to the box and the bouncing ball sat up behind the Argentine in a crowded box. leaping in to the air he executed a perfect overhead kick to start what turned in to a comprehensive win. Atletico Madrid 1 Atheltic Bilbao 0, February 2007In common with his soon to be father-in-law, Diego Maradona, Aguero has sublime close control and a low centre of gravity that make s him hard to knock off the ball. Against Athletic Bilbao he took a fast paced ball pinged in to his feet before spinning a defender and firing off a bullet of a shot all in one sweeping movement. Argentina U20 1 North Korea U20 0, July 2007Having already scored twice in Argentina's 6-0 rout of Panama, Aguero scored the only goal of the game, a quality free kick, to see off the North Koreans and set Argentina on route to the Fifa World Under-20 title in Canada. Proving that it isn't only Brazilians who can bend a decent free kick, Aguero expertly sent the ball up and over the wall and past the stranded goalkeeper. Deportivo La Coruna 1 Atletico Madrid 2, April 2009Aguero's quick burst of pace often gets him in front of defenders before they even know he is there. Latching on to a neat one-two Aguero breezed through the Deportivo offside trap before coolly dinking the ball over and past the onrushing goalkeeper. Simple be perfectly executed. Independiente 2006Don't have the information on who this goal was against but it still had to be included from the time when he made his name back home turning out for Independiente before his £23 million move to Atletico. Aguero takes the ball from the half way line, twists the blood of more than one defender before catching the goalkeeper out with a shot he wasn't expecting. Balance, poise, a cool head and fantastic technique. The boy's a bit special.
