Chelsea seal deal for left back but could this be the end for Branislav Ivanovic?

Chelsea’s deal for Augsburg defender Baba Rahman seems to be just about done with the player doing a lap of honour and bidding farewell to the German club’s fans over the weekend as reported by Sky Sports.

The deal is reported to be worth around £22million with the player agreeing a 5 year contract worth €2million a year. His agent Sascha Empacher only recently said that what was left was for the two clubs to agree which seems to have happened now and the player should join his new mates any time this week.

The 21 year old Ghana international is seen as a replacement for Filipe Luis and is set to fight it out with Cesar Azpilicueta for the left back role. However, since Azpilicueta is actually a right back by trade and Jose Mourinho seems to trust Rahman enough to spend £22million it may be curtains for Ivanovic. The Serbian international is looking increasingly sluggish and slow with a whole host of defensive and attacking errors along the way.

Jefferson Montero exposed Ivanovic the most with bursts of pace in the attacking third and swift closing down when the Serbian tried to go forward for the Blues. Chelsea’s strikers could do with some quality crossing, something Ivanovic is now struggling to produce.

We can only wait and see how the Special One will use Rahman but whichever way it turns out, it seems he will play a notable role at Stamford Bridge this season.
