Chelsea reject Mineiro told he must impress to land Schalke deal

German outfit Schalke are willing to give Chelsea reject Mineiro a contract until the end of the season if he can convince coach Felix Magath in training this week. The 34-year-old midfielder, signed as a free agent by former Blues boss Luiz Felipe Scolari last season, is without a club after being released at Stamford Bridge in the summer and can therefore be signed without a fee. Magath, who remembers the utility man from when he played for Hertha Berlin in 2007, believes he is just the kind of player he needs to complete his squad. 'Mineiro can fill a hole in the defensive midfield,' he told German magazine Kicker. 'He can play in any position there, in the centre or between the defence and midfield. 'We will watch him in training over the coming days and then decide where it is best to play him.' Mineiro made 36 appearances for Hertha but his contract was not extended in 2008. He then moved to the Blues, featuring in one game for the Premier League club. He has also been capped 24 times by Brazil.
