Chelsea seem to be in the picture to collect Argentine striker Mauro Icardi in the summer from Inter Milan as negotiations regarding a new deal hit the buffers.

A report in the Metro claims that Inter has been keen to tie the player into a new contract with release clauses but this has caused disagreements and caused the discussions to stall. The Metro cites Fichajes.net and claims the player is looking for a major club to give him an opportunity to leave Inter and compete for the games biggest prizes.

The report suggests that Chelsea fits the bill as an ambitious club with the resources to compete at the highest level of European football. Mourinho is also looking for a striker to support Costa up-front with Drogba unlikely to stay for a further season.

The 22-year-old striker who left Argentina at the age of 6 and learned his trade in the Canary Islands stated his desire to play for his birthland and picked up his one and only Argentina cap in 2013. Icardi joined the youth systems of Barca and Sampdoria before joining Inter in 2013.

The 2014-15 season has been a breakthrough season for the forward which has seen him notch-up his highest goal tally of 22 so far in all competitions compared to 9 the season before.

Further reports suggest that Chelsea have already made a £22.1million bid to sign the player and that negotiations are ongoing.
