Chelsea lodge eight figure opening bid for Premier League defensive starlet

Chelsea have had a £20million bid for Everton and England defender John Stones turned down, according to Sky Sports News Friday morning.

The Blues have thus far had a quiet summer transfer window, with former Manchester United, Monaco and Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao being the only incoming player. Whilst long serving 'keeper Petr Cech made a move across London to rivals Arsenal.

However, Jose Mourinho is eyeing defensive reinforcements. John Terry – despite being one of Chelsea's star performers last season – isn't getting any younger and won't have many more years at the top left.

This is where John Stones comes in. Mourinho believes the highly rated 21-year-old can fill the void that will be left when Terry eventually departs Stamford Bridge.

And now, Sky Sports News are reporting that the west London club have had an opening bid of £20million for the England international rejected by Everton.

Raheem Sterling's recent £49million move to Manchester City will likely encourage Everton to hold out for significantly more than Chelsea have offered with their exploratory opening bid.

After all, it's a buyers market and if Mourinho's side are serious about landing Stones, Everton will get every last penny out of Chelsea before they let one of their brightest young prospects leave before his time.
