Chelsea linked with £42 million bid for Atletico Madrid's Sergio Aguero

Russian owner Roman Abramovich is understood to have promised new manager Carlo Ancelotti a big name signing before the transfer window closes at the end of the month, and a report in the Sun claims the Argentina international is top of the billionaire's list of targets. Atletico are likely to turn down the offer, which would smash the current British transfer record of £32 million paid by Manchester City for Robinho last summer, and hold out for the full £50m buy-out clause in Aguero's contract. Ancelotti has not ruled out the possibility of bringing one more new face to Stamford Bridge. "The market finishes on August 31 and if there is some possibility to improve the squad we can do it," he said, but the Italian faces a race against time to complete the deal if Chelsea want the 21-year-old to avoid being cup tied as he is likely to feature in Atletico's Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos next week. If other weekend reports are to be believed, Chelsea will face competition from Premier League rivals Manchester United, who, despite saying they had completed all their summer business, have been linked with making a move for Aguero by the Independent. The paper claims Sir Alex Ferguson sent club scouts to Argentina's friendly against Russia earlier this week in order to assess how valuable Aguero could be to the Old Trafford club. Ferguson is understood to be considering the option having lost Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez this summer to Real Madrid and Manchester City respectively.
