Diego Costa scored his first Champions League goal for Chelsea as the beleaguered Barclays Premier League champions claimed a much-needed fillip by thrashing Maccabi Tel Aviv at Stamford Bridge.
Willian, Oscar, with a penalty, Costa - on as a substitute after being omitted as one of six changes following the loss at Everton - and Cesc Fabregas scored as the Blues opened Group G with a 4-0 victory.
It was their their first home win of the season and second in all after a miserable start to the campaign which has sparked suggestions of a crisis.
Chelsea may be floundering domestically, but once again they lead the way for English clubs in Europe after Arsenal followed Manchester United and City in making a losing start.
Sterner tests await Jose Mourinho's side - first up the Gunners here on Saturday - but there were signs of improvement against albeit limited opposition.
Problems remain and Eden Hazard, in particular, still appears short of his effervescent best, blazing a sixth-minute penalty over, but Ruben Loftus-Cheek was among those who impressed after recovering from a yellow card in the opening minute.
Mourinho said he knew what the consequences of changes would be - speculation of strained relationships - but that he was planning alterations anyway against a side in the group stages for the first time in 11 years.
Captain John Terry, Branislav Ivanovic, Nemanja Matic and Costa were omitted, with Baba Rahman among those drafted in, making his debut at left-back.
Maccabi Tel Aviv advanced by beating Basle in the play-offs, but n ever looked like emulating the Swiss side, who beat Chelsea home and away two years ago.
The Israeli team are managed by former Chelsea midfielder Slavisa Jokanovic, who last season led Watford to the Premier League and a 3-0 FA Cup third-round loss at Stamford Bridge.
Jokanovic was hoping for a tighter contest, but there were gaping holes in his side's defence from the start.
Mourinho was infuriated Predrag Rajkovic was not sent off for bringing down Willian for the first spot-kick, but luck was on the Blues' side as the Brazilian curled in a free-kick which evaded everyone.
He later went off with a hamstring problem, with Costa coming on.
Goalkeeper Rajkovic might have conceded another penalty when Loftus-Cheek was brought down two minutes before the interval.
Then the visitors' two Tal Ben Haims failed to get a grip of Costa, who was felled by the former Chelsea defender, with Oscar converting from the spot.
Costa, who failed to net in Europe for the Blues last term, emphatically volleyed in a cross from Fabregas - a combination which worked wonders for Chelsea in the first half of last season but has stuttered since - before the Spain playmaker struck the fourth on the counter-attack.
Hazard burst down the centre, played it right for Loic Remy, whose shot was palmed by Rajkovic into the path of Fabregas to score.
There were still signs of weakness which the visitors failed to exploit.
Eran Zahavi missed a free header and Nosakhare Igiebor somehow failed to convert after 88 minutes as Chelsea kept a clean sheet for the first time this season.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek: The academy graduate was under pressure as an English player with potential at a club whose record at promoting youth is poor. He was booked in the opening minute but performed admirably thereafter as a vital link.

Jose Mourinho made six changes to his side which lost at Everton with big-name omissions, including captain John Terry. The Portuguese said there would be unfounded speculation of rifts with those left out. The limited opposition made the game straightforward and when the third went in, Mourinho appeared reluctant to accept the adulation as the home faithful sang "Stand up for the Special One".

Belgium playmaker Hazard has missed three of his six Champions League penalties for Chelsea. His latest attempt, after a short run-up, was a kick which will be more at home at Twickenham when the Rugby World Cup begins on Friday.

Chelsea centre-back Gary Cahill felt the result provided just the boost his team needed, saying on BT Sport 2: "It was the perfect game for us. We had a lot of the ball, created a lot of chances, scored some good goals... a convincing win, a clean sheet - everything that we're looking for at this moment in time.
"We've had a difficult start, but we know the calibre of players we've got. We've had a slow start, a bad start. (But) winning games breeds confidence, breeds momentum, happiness - and that's just what we need."
Looking ahead to Saturday's visit of Arsenal to Stamford Bridge, he added: "It's another massive game for us - it's time for us to try to make a statement. We know it's going to be a tough game - they always are against the big teams - but we're looking forward to it and we should take confidence from tonight."
Mourinho was not getting carried away but was pleased with the outcome, saying on BT Sport: "I'm happy with the result, with the performance. But in the same way I'm not in hell with bad results, I'm not now in heaven because we won a game. But it's a good victory, we played well. Since minute one, we could feel that we were going to win the game.
"Missing the penalty I think was a good thing to test the team. You are in a negative moment to start the game, you miss a penalty, you must be really strong to believe. I think the players played very, very well. They showed good attitude, good with the ball, good defensively. To start with three points the group phase, it's not crucial but it's important."
Asked if he now faced a selection headache ahead of the Arsenal match, the Portuguese replied: "I never have headaches. I have always a lot of thinking. I try to read the game before the game starts and have the best decisions for the team. So a lot of thinking, yes - headaches, no."
