Chelsea join hunt for Bruno Alves

According to the Daily Star, concerns are growing at Stamford Bridge over the long-term fitness of centre-back Ricardo Carvalho, who has picked up a series of hamstring injuries. Carvalho has played just 18 games in all competitions this campaign and thoughts are that Chelsea will look to cash in on the 30-year-old while they still can. Alves, 27, is seen as the ideal replacement and has been in outstanding form for Porto, both domestically and in Europe. However, Chelsea will have to fend off competition from Real Madrid if they are to sign the Portuguese international. Reports in Spain suggest Alves is one of Real presidential candiate Florentino Perez's transfer targets this summer - should he be elected. Alves has three years left on his current contract with Porto and will not come cheap, the club slapping a £15m price tag on the defender's head. The player, though, is aware of Chelsea's interest, with the club having sent scouts to see him play six times, and has made it known he would welcome a move.
