Chelsea ban scandal: African exodus is the next problem for crisis club

What did Chelsea do wrong? FIFA claim they induced French teenager Gael Kakuta into breaking his contract with Lens with an illegal cash offer when he was 16 years old. But we won't know the full extent of what Chelsea have done until FIFA publish their full report in the next two or three weeks. [LNB]See you in a while: Chelsea look set to lose star striker Didier Drogba for a crucial part of the season when the Africa Cup of Nations takes place in January.[LNB]And the punishment? FIFA have banned Chelsea from signing players in the next two transfer windows (January 2010 and from the end of the 2009-10 season until September 1).[LNB]Can the club appeal? Yes, at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne. Has this happened before? Swiss club FC Sion received a transfer ban in April over the alleged luring of Egypt keeper Essam El Hadary before the end of his contract with the Al-Ahly club. Sion have appealed, and the ban has been frozen pending a decision. Sion bought players before the new season. [LNB]What's to stop Chelsea from taking players on loan? Loan players must be registered with the club, and Chelsea are not allowed to register any. [LNB]If they get a good offer, could they sell players? Yes, but it seems unlikely they will want to unload any of their squad in the circumstances. [LNB]Does this strengthen the bargaining position of players like Michael Ballack near the end of their contract? Probably, although it would be a brave man who puts a gun to the head of Roman Abramovich. Have you seen the size of his main bodyguard? [LNB]Can they bring their on-loan players back? Yes, because the players are already registered with them, and might be heading back to London sooner than anticipated. [LNB]What happens if they lose a chunk of their squad during the Africa Cup of Nations?Tough luck, say FIFA. And this ruling could spark club v country tensions for some of Chelsea's top players, including Didier Drogba and Michael Essien. [LNB] Thieves!
