Chelsea and City told Forlan will cost £31m (not bad for a United flop)

Chelsea and Manchester City are among four teams who have made approaches for Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan this summer. The Spaniards are determined to hold on to the former Manchester United player, quoting his £31million release clause as the only level at which a deal would be done. Barcelona are increasingly interested in taking the plunge as Valencia dig in their heels on a £43m valuation of Spain striker David Villa. Real Madrid are the other club to have made an enquiry, but they are thought to be no longer interested since adding Karim Benezema to the signings of Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as re-signing Alvaro Negredo from Almeria. City's interest is only likely to be renewed if their bid for Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor hits the skids. But it is unclear whether City would still be in the race. The 30-year-old Uruguay international hardly seems like the creative force that Carlo Ancelotti says he needs to add to the squad, but the Italian coach is thought to be keen on further adding to his attacking options.
