Chelsea 4-1 Wigan: Hazard return ends winless run

12 February 2013 08:56

Belgian international Eden Hazard scored his seventh goal in a Chelsea shirt to help his side to a 4 – 1 victory over Wigan on Saturday.

Hazard made his first start since the now infamous ball boy incident last month, when he kicked a ball boy in an attempt to speed up play against Swansea. Hazard has recently been cleared of additional punishment from the FA for the incident, and a goal in his return is sure to keep his mind moving forward to the final 12 games of the Premier League season.Chelsea too will be happy to have Hazard available again, as the team failed to capture a victory in his absence.

With Manchester City losing a shocker to Southampton on the weekend, Chelsea are now only four points shy of second place, but only one point ahead of fourth place Tottenham.Unfortunately for the Blues, the Premier League title has all but been awarded to Manchester United, as the Red Devils have a 12 point lead on City with only 12 games remaining in the season.

Chelsea’s focus must now shift to what is immediately possible, meaning a UEFA Champions League berth next season and another FA cup title. Chelsea are currently in a qualifying position, but with only nine points separating second and fifth place in the BPL, Chelsea will need to close out the season strongly in order to stay in the top four.

After luckily scraping out a 2 – 2 draw with League-One side Brentford on a last-minute Torres strike, Chelsea need to take advantage of their good fortune and get a victory against the overmatched minnows and advance to the fifth round of the FA Cup.

With an in-form Hazard back, and Nigerian internationals Victor Moses and John Obi Mikel set to return after an Africa Cup of Nations victory, Chelsea are in a position tosucceed in both endeavors.
