Chelsea 2 Manchester United 2; Chelsea win 41 on penalties: match report

09 August 2009 17:14
Patrice Evra and Michael Ballack were involved in a bad-tempered Wembley confrontation as Chelsea sealed a penalty shoot-out victory to launch Carlo Ancelotti's reign with silverware in the Community Shield. Salomon Kalou's penalty proved decisive after Ryan Giggs and Evra had missed for Manchester United. But Evra and Ballack's second-half clash suggested that there was much more to this season curtain-raiser than the distinction of lifting the Community Shield. Premier League champions United, who had taken a first-half lead through Nani before Ricardo Carvalho's 52nd minute equaliser, were angered by referee Chris Foy's failure to halt play in the build-up to Lampard's goal following a cynical block by Ballack on Evra that left the French full-back floored in the Chelsea half. Chelsea broke free to score while Evra, who received a four-match ban last season for his involvement in a post-match Stamford Bridge brawl at the end of the 2007-08 campaign, lay prostrate on the turf. But despite United's protests, Lampard's goal was allowed to stand for the FA Cup winners, who were taken to a shoot-out following Wayne Rooney's 92nd minute equaliser. United began with summer recruits Michael Owen and Antonio Valencia on the bench, but the Premier League champions - in their first competitive outing since the £80m sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid - found their feet quickest in the humid Wembley conditions. And after Evra had diverted Branislav Ivanovic's header onto the crossbar on six minutes, United claimed the lead four minutes later through Nani's eye-catching strike. The Portuguese winger faces a challenge this season in proving that he can fill the void left by Ronaldo's departure. Nani scored just six times last term, but he will be expected to contribute more often this campaign in order to help replace the 26 scored by Ronaldo during 2008-09. He certainly made the perfect start, however, by scoring his first goal since February in spectacular style. Having received the ball on the left flank, Nani cut inside and beat the statuesque Ivanovic before curling a right-foot strike past Petr Cech from 20 yards. Cech was unsighted, but it is a shot he would have expected to save. Ancelotti's team deservedly equalised on 52 minutes, however, when Ricardo Carvalho scored with a far post header from Malouda's cross after Foster had initially done well to beat Drogba to the ball. The game then erupted into life when Lampard put Chelsea 2-1 ahead on 70 minutes following the clash between Evra and Ballack. Had the Merseyside official witnessed Ballack's challenge on the Frenchman, it is unlikely he would have allowed play to continue for Lampard to score. But United's frustrations boiled over and Evra was fortunate only to receive a yellow card after taking retribution with a late challenge on Ballack ten minutes from full-time. For those that believe the Community Shield does not matter, however, Rooney's defiant celebration after netting his 92nd minute equaliser suggested it actually meant everything.
