Charles Sale: To go or not to go? Fabio Capello weighs up Rio World Cup draw riddle

08 February 2011 00:14
Just how committed England manager Fabio Capello remains to the national team will become evident when he makes his decision on whether to go to Brazil for the World Cup draw in July. [LNB]Capello, who will be leaving the England job after Euro 2012, will have no involvement in the qualifying campaign for the 2014 global tournament. But as the national team boss earning ?6million a year, he will be expected to be in Rio when he still has a year to go on his FA contract. [LNB]It will also be a high-profile opportunity for the Italian to show players, fans and employers that he remains 100 per cent focused on England at a time when offers from his home country may be on the table - another byproduct of the ridiculously long notice period. [LNB] Hats your lot: Capello will play no part in England's qualification for the 2014 World Cup - so will he be at the qualifiers draw? [LNB]The FA will discuss the Brazil issue with Capello, but he will have the final say on whether he boards the flight to South America. There is a precedent. [LNB]Sven Goran Eriksson attended the Euro 2008 qualifying draw in Switzerland in January 2006 soon after the announcement that he would be leaving after that year's World Cup in Germany. [LNB]Capello's attention to details which will affect his tenure as coach led to England wanting to play tomorrow's friendly - whatever the opposition - in Copenhagen's Parken Stadium. [LNB]The retractable roof ensures similar match conditions to the Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales at the Millennium Stadium next month. [LNB] England's one-day cricket team had rap singer Ben Drew, known as Plan B, on their flight home from Australia - with players Steven Finn and Matt Prior both fans of his music. [LNB]But after the injuries and shambles of the 6-1 limited-overs series defeat Down Under, it will surely be Plans C, D and E having to be utilised by coach Andy Flower and captain Andrew Strauss at the World Cup. [LNB]Her parting from Clarke ended in acrimonious fashion with a row over her holiday entitlement. Chambers's replacement will be Juliet Davidson, who used to work for the ICC. [LNB]ITV Sport will test Gareth Southgate's confidence that his new job as FA head of elite development won't affect his pundit role. [LNB]FA employee Southgate will be the ITV analyst for England against Denmark on Wednesday - a conflict that has proved fraught in the past. [LNB]Trevor Brooking, even though he was famous for sitting on the fence, stopped working for the BBC after joining the FA. [LNB]Rob's RFU job search... Rob Andrew, despite losing his position as director of elite rugby for the RFU in the big Twickenham restructuring, is understood to have applied for the vacant operations director role by last night's deadline. [LNB]IMG say BBC were given opportunities but did not believe they had a competitor. The Beeb even warned they might reduce their ?250,000 offer if funding dropped after the General Election. [LNB]The anti-Fernando Torres banner at Stamford Bridge 'You paid ?50million for Margi Clarke' was a publicity opportunity for the Scouse actress. [LNB]Her agent Anne Shore took advantage with her Facebook message: 'I feel it only fair to address this rumour head on. I can confirm Margi is in London and settling into a new job.'
