Cech admits to Eastlands error
08 Dec 2009 - 14:12:07
Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has admitted that he was at fault for Manchester City's winning goal in the 2-1 weekend Premier League reverse at Eastlands.
The 27-year-old Czech Republic international was beaten by a 25-yard free-kick from Carlos Tevez and accepts that he should have done better.
He commented: "I don't want to go into whether it was a free-kick in the first place - I should have saved it.
"It was a very poor free-kick and it finished in the back of the net because I anticipated too much. I made a step to the wrong side just before Tevez fired the shot.
"At that moment it was too late to move to the other side to save the ball. It was a soft goal to concede."
Blues head coach Carlo Ancelotti had earlier stated: "This season, I think Cech has done very well.
"I like him, he takes the responsibility and likes to come out and catch the ball in the box. He could do better if you ask me about the free-kick on Saturday.
"I think the goalkeeper has to stay on his post and the player has to put the ball over the wall and in.
"Even a good goalkeeper can make a mistake sometimes, but Petr has been doing very well this season."
