// A bit of a hack but it works// The article snippet is wrapped onto a second line, even when #article-sub is emptyif( $("div#article-sub").children().length == 0 ) {$("div#article-sub").remove();} Manchester United remain on course to defend their Carling Cup crown, seeing off Wolves at Old Trafford despite being reduced to ten men.[LNB] Everton, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Tottenham also booked their safe passage into round four of the Carling Cup on Wednesday, while Manchester City needed extra-time to see off Fulham.[LNB]Manchester United looked to be in trouble half an hour into their home meeting with Wolves, but recovered admirably to seal a 1-0 victory.[LNB]Brazilian full-back Fabio saw red for the Red Devils after 30 minutes, but Sir Alex Ferguson's men rallied and Danny Welbeck snatched a winner after 66 minutes.[LNB]Everton made light work of their all-Premier League meeting with Hull City at the KC Stadium, easing to a 4-0 win.[LNB]The Toffees had the tie wrapped up inside 25 minutes, allowing them to preserve their energy ahead of the resumption of league duties this weekend.[LNB]Yakubu Aiyegbeni curled David Moyes' men in front after 11 minutes and his strike partner Jo doubled their advantage nine minutes later.[LNB]Dan Gosling was then awarded acres of space by the Tigers after 24 minutes and made no mistake as he wrapped up a comfortable win.[LNB]Hull were marginally better after the interval but were unable to prevent Leon Osman from adding a fourth after 57 minutes.[LNB]Tottenham were made to work a lot harder at Deepdale by Preston North End, but prevailed 5-1.[LNB]Peter Crouch broke the deadlock for Spurs after 14 minutes, benefiting from some fine work by Gareth Bale before finishing in style.[LNB]Harry Redknapp's side were then grateful to Heurelho Gomes for keeping them in front on a number of occasions before the in-form Jermain Defoe nodded home after 37 minutes.[LNB]Crouch then killed off the Lilywhites' dogged efforts with 13 minutes remaining when he notched his second of the game, but Chris Brown did rescue some pride for the hosts when he found the net with seven minutes remaining.[LNB]Robbie Keane looked to have had the last word on the night when he profited from some tired Preston legs to add his name to scoresheet after 87 minutes, but Crouch wrapped up his hat-trick with just seconds remaining.[LNB]Aston Villa were also in action against Championship opposition and put paid to Cardiff City's dreams as they emerged as 1-0 victors.[LNB]The men from the Midlands burst out of the blocks against the Bluebirds and grabbed the only goal of the game after just three minutes.[LNB]Gabriel Agbonlahor was the man on target as he fired home after being found by the hard-working John Carew.[LNB]James Milner squandered a golden opportunity to build on that lead in the second half when he smashed a penalty against a post.[LNB]Chelsea were pushed hard by second tier outfit Queens Park Rangers at Stamford Bridge, but did enough to secure a 1-0 win.[LNB]The Blues, who were skippered by the returning Joe Cole, were thankful to Salomon Kalou's 52nd minute effort for bailing them out of trouble.[LNB]Manchester City and Fulham looked destined to be heading for penalties at Eastlands before the Blues claimed a 2-1 win.[LNB]Zoltan Gera's spectacular 34th minute strike opened the scoring, but Gareth Barry levelled seven minutes into the second half.[LNB]There were no further goals in normal time, but Kolo Toure ensured it would be City who go into Saturday's fourth round draw when he pounced with nine minutes of extra-time remaining.[LNB]
