Blues win Lampard appeal
03 Feb 2009 - 14:40:58
Chelsea have been successful with their appeal to the FA against the sending-off of Frank Lampard by referee Mike Riley during Sunday's 2-0 defeat at Liverpool.
Riley gave Lampard a straight red for a challenge on Xabi Alonso on the hour mark at Anfield, although replays showed clearly that the England international had won the ball fairly.
Blues head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari had said straight after the game: "I do not want to criticise the referee, all I ask is that he looks at the video with the men from the FA.
"If they agree that Lampard did not commit a foul for his red card, maybe they will change the decision
"I have not spoken to the referee, it was his decision. I hope though that he will look at the TV and see that he should change the decision."
An FA regulatory commission has now reviewed the footage of the incident and has rescinded the red card, with referee Riley having also accepted that he had made the wrong decision.
