Blues confirm Drogba op
08 Dec 2007 - 15:20:46
Chelsea have confirmed that Didier Drogba has undergone surgery to correct his troublesome knee injury, after suffering a fresh problem during training on Friday.
The 29-year-old Ivory Coast ace has been dogged by the injury for several weeks, but had hoped to put off the operation until it was absolutely necessary.
A short statement from Blues club doctor Bryan English read: "Didier's knee locked yesterday afternoon and the decision was taken to have the operation immediately in the medical interests of the player.
"The procedure went well and he will begin his rehabilitation as soon as possible."
Blues head coach Avram Grant had earlier backed his squad to cope with the loss of Drogba for several weeks.
He said: "We have other types of striker. The best squad is when you have four strikers that are different from one another and we are prepared.
"This is the reason that Claudio Pizarro, Andriy Shevchenko and the others are in the squad.
"Pizarro is a very good player, very technical and played at a high level with Bayern Munich. He knows how to score and give assists. He is a good player and I'm sure he will be good for us.
"Shevchenko is a great player with a great attitude. When you see him train you see he is doing his best."
