Blues to appeal Fifa ban
Chelsea have revealed that they will contest Fifa's decision to impose a transfer ban on the club.
World football's governing body announced on Thursday that the Blues will be unable to purchase any new players in the next two transfer windows.
The sanction comes on the back of a complaint from French outfit Lens regarding Chelsea's signing of Gael Kakuta in 2007.
Fifa have decreed that the Premier League side contravened transfer regulations in their pursuit of the young midfielder and have decided they must be punished.
As well as preventing the Blues from adding to their squad until January 2011, they have also been forced to pay £113,000 in compensation and Kakuta has been stung with a four-month worldwide suspension and a £680,000 fine.
Chelsea are understandably disappointed to have been hit by the unprecedented punishment and have announced that they plan to appeal the ruling.
"Chelsea will mount the strongest appeal possible following the decision of Fifa's Dispute Resolution Chamber over Gael Kakuta," read a statement on the club's official website.
"The sanctions are without precedent to this level and totally disproportionate to the alleged offence and the financial penalty imposed.
"We cannot comment further until we receive the full written rationale for this extraordinary arbitrary decision."
