Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Benfica defender David Luiz on a five-and-a-half-year contract for an undisclosed fee. Liverpool striker Fernando Torres and Brazilian defender Luiz both beat the 11pm cut-off to join the Barclays Premier League champions, who splashed out an incredible £75million on the pair on transfer deadline day. Striker Torres arrived for a reported £50million from Liverpool, smashing the transfer record between British clubs, while Benfica finally allowed defender Luiz to move on in a £25million-plus deal. Luiz, 23, said on Chelsea's website: "I am delighted to be joining a big English club, and I know very well the quality that Chelsea has. "It is a major challenge for me but I am determined and confident in my ability to adapt to this excellent league, and I look forward to meeting my new team-mates." Luiz will not be eligible for the Blues' Champions League knockout stage campaign after featuring for Benfica this season.
