Chelsea have admitted the behaviour of their players against Barcelona was 'regrettable' after Uefa initiated disciplinary proceedings. European football's governing body charged the Blues on Friday for the improper conduct of their players and for the behaviour of their fans. Didier Drogba and Jose Bosingwa are also facing possible punishment and Chelsea have been requested to file statements by next Friday ahead of a hearing on 17th June. Chelsea have confirmed they will respond officially to Uefa but they have also released a statement to explain their actions on the night. Barcelona progressed to the final of the UEFA Champions League after a controversial second leg at Stamford Bridge finished 1-1, giving the Spanish side victory on away goals. The Blues had several strong penalty appeals turned down and were frustrated with referee Tom Henning Ovrebo at the end of the match, although they did later apologised for what happened. "Chelsea Football Club will be responding to the Uefa charges issued today in due course, on behalf of both the club and the players concerned," read the statement on the club's official website. "We would like to make clear again, as we did at the time, that the incidents in question were regrettable and occurred only because of the high emotions and frustrations which arose from the disappointment of a controversial defeat in such an important game. "We are all acutely aware of the responsibilities that lie with both the club and its players in regards setting a good example as role models and upholding the principles of fair play in football. "Both of the players accept that and apologised honestly very soon afterwards for their actions."
