Sunderland defender Phil Bardsley has been charged with violent conduct by the Football Association following an incident involving Chelsea's Juan Mata during their 2-1 home defeat on Saturday.

Bardsley appeared to stamp on Mata as the clock ran down at the Stadium of Light. Referee Lee Probert did not take any action, allowing the FA to review the incident.

"The FA has today charged Sunderland defender Phil Bardsley with violent conduct following an incident in his side's home game against Chelsea," said a statement on thefa.com.

"Bardsley was involved in an incident with Chelsea's Juan Mata during Sunderland's 2-1 defeat at the Stadium of Light on Saturday 10 September.

"Bardsley has until 6pm on Wednesday 14 September to respond to the charge."
