Another fine mess! Ban bad boys as they don't miss the money, says former referee Winter

Former Premier League referee Jeff Winter believes fines for disrespectful behaviour and poor discipline are no longer enough to deter players. Writing in his Sun column the retired official proposes longer suspensions for players and more touchline bans for managers to eradicate the ugly scenes that take place up and down the country every weekend. 'Fining millionaires earning tens of thousands a week doesn't work,' wrote Winter. 'What you need to do with players is suspend them. With managers, you can issue them with touchline bans. 'People watching need to see they're not getting away with this behaviour. There should be respect from one player to another. They're cheating each other by diving and they're putting colleagues' careers on the line with challenges. 'If it happened in another workplace, where one colleague smacked another in the face, they would get the sack. 'Players are effing and blinding at officials, who don't take action because they don't feel they will get the support of the authorities.' And Winter slammed Chelsea's behaviour at the final whistle after they were knocked out of the Champions League by Barcelona last week. 'The scenes at Chelsea were disgraceful,' he said. 'Chelsea should receive a big fine, Michael Ballack should have a four-match ban in Europe and Didier Drogba should get a six-match ban. 'The Respect campaign must keep going. If the authorities are serious, they must up the ante and start taking action. 'If the football authorities really want this campaign to work, they need to start hitting the people who step out of line.'
