Chelsea have confirmed that Michael Ballack has been forced to have an operation on his ankle injury and will miss the Champions League semi-final second leg at Anfield on Tuesday night.
The German joins Ricardo Carvalho on the sidelines after the Portuguese defender injured his knee in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Bolton Wanderers.
Ballack limped out of last weekend's goalless draw at Newcastle United with the injury.
A statement from the club read: "We can confirm that Michael Ballack had an operation on his ankle injury on Friday."
The 30-year-old has scored seven goals in 46 appearances for the Blues since his switch from Bayern Munich last summer.
