Andy Carroll stays! Newcastle must keep 20m Tottenham target, says Alan Pardew

Alan Pardew insists it is time for Newcastle to prove they are a big club and hang on to star striker and Tottenham target Andy Carroll. Spurs are considering a £20million bid for the Magpies striker. Chelsea are also monitoring Carroll, who has bagged 10 goals in the Premier League so far this season. But Pardew says that the interest from the top flight's big guns proves that Carroll, who made his England debut against France last month, has developed into a top-class performer while at St James' Park. Wanted man: Andy Carroll striker has been targeted by Tottenham And with Newcastle currently sitting in eighth spot in the Premier League, Pardew also says the club must now show they can push on and join the elite by holding on to Carroll. Pardew told the Newcastle Chronicle: 'It (the transfer speculation) does get boring but it is not going to stop - it will never stop. 'It won't stop because he's a talent and that's what happens at big clubs. We have to have a big-club mentality and hold on to our best player.' Pardew added: 'It just goes to show you his value at the moment. Top talent: Alan Pardew (left) rates Carroll as Newcastle's best player 'Andy just has to keep working hard and doing what he does best. His career path is here. He has already proved that playing for Newcastle United will not hinder his international career. So why does he need to go? He loves it here and loves the fans - long may it continue.' Pardew, however, also admitted that he has not singled out Carroll for special attention since he replaced Chris Hughton as Newcastle manager earlier this month. He added: 'I've not made a special case to do that. I've tried to cover all of the players the best I can. 'There will be situations where I need to make sure his welfare is looked after and his progression is looked after. That is something I'm look at with my technical side to make sure his progression as an individual here is right. That will be important for him and important for us.'  Redknapp weighs up £20m bid to take Carroll from Newcastle to Spurs All I want for Xmas...
