Ancelotti: Cech save was the key

15 May 2010 - 18:15:06

Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti admitted he had thought luck was against his side before they eventually edged past Portsmouth 1-0 in Saturday's FA Cup final at Wembley.

The Premier League champions contrived to hit the woodwork five times in the first half and would have gone behind early in the second period if Petr Cech had not saved Kevin-Prince Boateng's poor penalty.

Didier Drogba's free-kick three minutes after the penalty miss proved crucial as Chelsea completed their first ever Double even though Frank Lampard screwed his own spot-kick wide in the closing stages.

Former AC Milan boss Ancelotti said of Cech's penalty save: "It was the key moment. It would have been very difficult if Portsmouth had scored.

"It is very important to win the double. It is the first time for the club and for me also. It's been a fantastic season, a fantastic day.

"We were unlucky in the first half. It can happen in football, (but) five posts never happened in my career, five in one half.

"As a group, the organisation of the club, everyone worked this year to do their best and everyone deserved it."

Asked if he hoped to win next season's Champions League, Ancelotti added: "We will try. This year we wanted to win the Champions League but we have to be happy for the Premier League and the FA Cup."
