7 things we learned as Chelsea scraped a late winner against Everton

11 February 2015 23:16

Chelsea kept their lead at the top of the Premier League after clinching a win against Everton at Stamford Bridge.

While the match looked set to end in 0-0 draw, Chelsea used a momentary lapse in concentration from Everton (and Tim Howard in particular) to clinch a 1-0 victory with a Willian goal on the 89th minute, moments after Gareth Barry was sent off for a second yellow card.

Here’s what we learned as the teams faced-off.

1. It’s still weird seeing Aaron Lennon in an Everton shirt

Tonight saw Lennon make his full debut for The Toffees after his loan move from Tottenham.

2. There’s a lot of love for Tim Howard and Petr Cech

Cech was making only his fourth Premier League start this term, although we don’t know if Thibaut Courtois was rested or dropped. Meanwhile Howard was back in the side after being declared fit.

3. Kurt Zouma might keep Gary Cahill out of a starting place for a while

He played well, giving Everton few chances to break, snuffing out any forays forward.

4. No-one is quite sure how Petr Cech is anyone’s second choice

He might not have been Michael Owen’s man of the match, but Cech made two crucial saves from Lukaku efforts.

It meant that when it was 0-0 with minutes to go and Barry got sent off, Chelsea were still in the running for something, and that something was kinda crucial with Manchester City’s 4-1 thrashing of Stoke City.

5. Some optimistic Everton supporters can tweet very quickly

There was a fair few comments timed in that blink-and-you-miss-it gap between Barry being shown a red card for his second yellow and Willian’s goal in the 89th minute.

6. Chelsea may have got a win, but the team is missing Costa/really missing Costa/definitely missing Costa*

7. Yes, Chelsea wanted a win, but fans really wanted Cuadrado to be their goalscorer

Cuadrado made his full debut in tonight’s Chelsea side but fans weren’t really bothered about that, they wanted to see this guy busting some moves.
