5 reasons why Chelsea should recall Romelu Lukaku
In their last four games, Chelsea have amassed two goals. You can almost feel for Rafael Benitez as he plans to fix the latest Chelsea conundrum. Having seen his side defend relatively well against Manchester City last week at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea will look to build on the recent success when they host Fulham on Wednesday night.
With Fernando Torres and Daniel Sturridge the two main strikers at the Bridge right now, Chelsea fans should be worried where there side will score goals. The three musketeers sit behind the lone striking role in Benitez's favoured 4-2-3-1 formation, and with the creative trio of Eden Hazard, Juan Mata and Oscar, a host of Europe's top strikers would be desperate to play for the London Club.
However, Chelsea already have the ideal striker on the cards. Romelu Lukaku, the 19 year old Belgian who is currently on loan at West Brom has scored four goals already this season, and is proving to Chelsea fan's what their side are missing out on.
Below, I have five reasons why Chelsea should re-call the colossal youngster, as soon as possible.
He is the natural heir to Chelsea legend Didier Drogba.
At 6'3, the powerful Belgian has blistering pace and with his impressive, commanding physique, it is simple to compare the two. Lukaku could easily be utilised as a target man, and although his touch may not be as deft enough as Drogba's, the youngster has plenty of time on his side. Didier Drogba moved to Stamford Bridge at the age of 26, cemented his legacy at Chelsea with legendary status and left at 34. Lukaku has the potential to surpass the legend of Didier Drogba, although the Ivorian certainly has massive boots to fill.
He is scoring important goals for West Brom.
Fernando Torres and Daniel Sturridge have 7 goals between them in all competitions. However the number of key, match winning goals is almost non-existent. Lukaku recently scored an 81st minute penalty against Sunderland, which ultimately killed off the game, earning his side three points and sending them third in the league. His goal against Newcastle gave his side hope in the 55th minute, whilst his 77th minute goal against Liverpool earlier this season ended all hopes of the Merseyside club earning a comeback.
He is beginning to prove himself in the Premier League
Having been signed under Villas-Boas' brief tenure, the Belgian failed to earn himself a regular first team spot. Drogba was still playing for Chelsea at this point, and Villas-Boas was still struggling to work out how to play Fernando Torres and the Ivorian in the same line up. He was left on the bench for the majority of the season . Di Matteo shipped him out on loan at the beginning of this season, and Chelsea fans may deem that decision as a thoughtless decision. Lukaku has made 11 appearances this season for West Brom, and this loan experience will be crucial to maximizing his development and potential.
He Gives Chelsea a different dimension.
Chelsea's most dominant period in the Premier League era was when Didier Drogba was at his best. Abramovich has signed the most talented and exciting youngsters in the world recently, but they lack the tenacity and experience of being able to replicate the Barcelona midfielders, which ultimately, is what Abramovich is after. For the time being Chelsea need a different approach to breaking down defences. Lukaku, who is able to play as a target man as well as being exceptionally gifted with his feet, will give Chelsea the opportunity to break down opposing defences in different ways. If their new, interlinking passing play fails to break down sterner defense-minded teams, Lukaku can offer a more physical approach if needed.
Maintain the young trend at the club.
A few seasons back, Chelsea fans were worried by the average age of the club. With the likes of Anelka, Drogba, Ballack, Deco and even John Terry, Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard all approaching the twilight of their careers, a change had to be made. The majority of the players have left the club, and the likes of Juan Mata, Hazard, Oscar, Luiz, Cahill, Azpilicueta and Marin have all been brought in. The millions of Abramovich have once again gone to extremely effective use as the Chelsea squad look capable of being an effective unit for years to come. At just the age of 19, Lukaku will continue the young trend of bright, up and coming talents. In comparison to the soon to be 29 year old Fernando Torres.
