    Spector targets Germany

    16 Mar 2006 - 13:59:39

Charlton defender Jonathan Spector has set his sights on securing a place in the United States squad for the World Cup finals.

The 20-year-old has started just nine Premiership matches since moving to The Valley on a year-long loan from Manchester United, but believes a spot in Bruce Arena's squad will be his if he can keep his place in the Addicks' line-up for the rest of the campaign.

"I was given no guarantees about playing and my main objectives were to try to get into the first team and to gain experience," Spector told Valley Review.

"I think the competition for places has really improved my game. You have to stay switched on all the time because there is always somebody waiting to take your place.

"It has been a great experience to be in and around the first team on a regular basis because when I signed for Charlton I had no expectations about the amount of games I would play. I have learned some valuable lessons.

"I am focused on playing and helping the team climb the table, and that would also benefit my chances of going to the World Cup."
