Smertin ponders move home

Charlton Athletic midfielder Alexei Smertin is considering an offer to move to a club in his native Russia.

The 30-year-old is on a season-long loan at The Valley from Chelsea, but with the Russian transfer window set to close on March 12, his departure could come much sooner than expected.

"I've received an offer from a Russian club and now my agent is considering that," Smertin explained. "But I can't say anything definitely."

Smertin is currently in his third season in England following his £3.45million move to Chelsea from Bordeaux and although he has never managed to establish himself in the first team at Stamford Bridge, he has impressed during loan spells with Portsmouth and Charlton.
