    Sam brace keeps Addicks top

    29 Aug 2009 - 17:05:06

Charlton Athletic and Leeds United maintained their 100 per cent winning starts to the season with victories at Tranmere Rovers and Colchester United respectively.

Phil Parkinson's side had been tipped to struggle this term following last season's relegation from the Championship, but first-half goals by Lloyd Sam and Jose Semedo put them in control at Prenton Park.

Sam added a third goal immediately after the restart before Nick Bailey scored a fourth in the 68th minute to leave John Barnes' side in the bottom four.

Meanwhile, Leeds won 2-1 at managerless Colchester United with the prolific Jermaine Beckford grabbing the winner.

Norwich City continued their improvement under former U's boss Paul Lambert with a 2-0 victory at Hartlepool United, former Pools stalwart Michael Nelson opening the scoring midway through the first half and Stephen Hughes adding a second in the 64th minute.

MK Dons look as though they will be promotion challengers again as Paul Ince's side won 2-1 at Exeter City with Jermaine Easter's two goals in the opening six minutes proving decisive.

Huddersfield Town came from behind to beat Yeovil Town 2-1 with Michael Collins scoring the winner, while Southampton drew 1-1 at Stockport County in a game between two teams that were in administration last season.

Damian Scannell scored a late winner as Swindon Town edged past Southend United 2-1, while Paul Thirlwell netted in stoppage time as Greg Abbott's Carlisle United side deservedly drew 2-2 at Leyton Orient.

Wycombe Wanderers beat Bristol Rovers 2-1 while Brentford continued their quest to secure back-to-back promotions with a 1-1 draw against Oldham Athletic.

Finally the mid-table clash between Walsall and Gillingham ended goalless.
