Veteran left-back Chris Powell has finally signed a new one-year contract with the Addicks, after looking set to leave The Valley.

The 33-year-old had hoped to secure a two-year deal and had attracted interest from both Fulham and West ham, but has now opted to stay on with Charlton.

His representative Tony Finnigan admitted that Powell had been very close to leaving Alan Curbishley's side, as he said: "He was very close. You don't get closer than having your agent talking to other clubs.

"I spoke to Fulham and another club on his behalf. In the end, he decided to stay.

"It would have been lovely to have two or three-year deal, but you have to accept clubs have tighter budgets these days."

Powell has been with Charlton for five years following his arrival from Derby County.
