Parky gives Shelvey a rest

Charlton Athletic manager Phil Parkinson has confirmed that Jonjo Shelvey has been left out of the side in recent weeks to try and recharge his batteries.

The 17-year-old has sat out the draws with Tranmere Rovers and Walsall, but is expected to be back in the fold sooner rather than later.

Parkinson told the South London Press: "We just wanted to give Jonjo a break.

"He wasn't in the starting XI and I looked at the subs and thought it would be good for him to watch from the stands and reflect. Sometimes it does you good to have a complete break."

Parkinson managed to seal a couple of signings on transfer deadline day, with winger Kyel Reid joining on loan from Sheffield United and Akpo Sodje returning to The Valley from Sheffield Wednesday.
