Parkinson feels victory relief
14 Jan 2009 - 11:32:55
Charlton Athletic boss Phil Parkinson was a relieved man after seeing his side finally secure a win, a 1-0 FA Cup triumph at Norwich City, after 18 games without a victory.
A Darren Ambrose goal proved decisive at Carrow Road, with the Addicks setting up a fourth round clash with Sheffield United.
Parkinson said: "Ending the long run without a win was the most important thing. It's a mixture of relief and it's great to have that monkey off our backs.
"Hopefully now we can carry on the good work in the league, but that will only happen if the players show the same sort of qualities that they produced tonight.
"Tonight the players have got out there, rolled their sleeves up and come away with a thoroughly deserved victory. We just needed something to go for us after the run we've been having.
"The league is so close with everybody capable of beating everybody else and what you need when you're in a position like us is a strong mentality and a fighting spirit.
"That's exactly what my players gave me today and it was especially pleasing that there were eight players who came through our academy showing those qualities out there over the course of the game."
