Bent forces the issue
11 Nov 2006 - 10:25:19
Charlton Athletic striker Darren Bent is determined to stay on the goal trail and remain in the England squad in the immediate future.
The 22-year-old has already netted eight goals this term for the Addicks and has vowed to carry on the good work and force head coach Steve McClaren to keep him in the national team set-up.
Bent commented: "It does get a little bit frustrating when you are knocking in the goals and people are saying I am getting overlooked.
"All I can do is keep scoring - if I stop it will give people a reason to think I do not deserve to be in the squad.
"I can definitely bring something different to the table and help England as a whole.
"I do not think being at Charlton will harm my England chances. If you play in the Premier League, you cannot be unfashionable.
"If you are scoring, you are scoring against top defenders. All I have to do is keep playing well."
Bent is in the 28-man party for the friendly against Holland, but has won just two caps to date and missed out on a place in the squad for last summer's World Cup finals in Germany.
